The Uber Airport Rules for 11 Major Cities in the U.S.
Uber is a convenient way to get around most cities, but airport rides can be tricky. It's possible to use Uber for dropping off and picking up at airports in some cities, but there are rules and drawbacks to be aware of. Travel + Leisure lays them out.The rules seem to change periodically, but Travel + Leisure offers a current snapshot of what your Uber options look like around the country. Here are a few highlights on their list:
- Los Angeles: Though L.A. mayor Eric Garcetti has stated that Uber and Lyft would be able to pick up passengers at LAX by this summer, it now looks like that might not happen until Thanksgiving or possibly the end of the year.
- Chicago: Ride-share services such as Uber and Lyft will be able to start picking up passengers at O'Hare and Midway Airports starting in 2016. For now, travelers can take a taxi or use public transit. The CTA connects O'Hare and Midway to downtown Chicago. The Metra North provides another way to get to O'Hare
- New York City: The Port Authority is considering charging an access fee for Uber and other ride-share services, but it's not likely to effect holiday travel plans. Currently, Uber has dedicated lots near JFK, Laguardia, and Newark Airports where drivers wait to be pinged by riders. Keep in mind that with high demand for taxis and ride-shares, wait times can be long.
